Surface

Every surface tells a story. I am fascinated by surfaces, particularly when they have a strong narrative - often presenting as a diary, a historical record of a life built up in layers in a natural and uncontrived manner. My passion for raku firing is fuelled by this fascination: a piece that begins its life with a simple surface is transformed, often in an unpredictable and precarious way, into something totally unique - as if it were responsible for its own destiny.
